Yikes! Candy lovers, watch out - those Junior Mints, Red Hots, Lemonhead and Boston Baked Beans you love so much have a secret ingredient. Turns out their hard, shiny shells are glazed with something called shellac - which is made from the secretions of lac bugs. Gross! And it takes around 100,000 of these little critters to make just one pound of shellac flakes. Then they mix it with alcohol to make a confectioner’s glaze. Who knew?
